The highest French order of merit, both military and civil. Established in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte, it has been retained (with occasional slight alterations) by all later French governments and regimes.
Here the type from the period of 3rd Republic (1870-1951), possibly Word War 1 manufacturing.
Silver, partially enameled, medallions gilt. Very nice condition, with complete ans intact enamel. Small gilt defects. Cross on the original old ribbon.
